RP111 Series 500mA Fast Transient Response Voltage Regulator

Ricoh Semiconductor Support Centre has launched the RP111 fast transient response voltage regulator which assures a solid and reliable power supply for electronic circuits.

A key feature of the RP111 is its fast transient response, meaning it can maintain its output voltage within a small specified tolerance range, even during fast line and load transient peaks. In testing, the RP111 achieved a high static output voltage accuracy of 0.8% with a temperature drift coefficient of only 30ppm/°C.

The ripple rejection is 75dB (at 1kHz), suppressing any ripple on the output voltage, even at higher frequencies (10kHz) where it has a score of 70dB. Due to advanced CMOS process technology, RP111 consumes only 80µA of supply current and is particularly suitable for battery powered applications.

For added protection of the electronics circuit, a number of circuits have been embedded:

  • A fold-back current limit circuit decreases the output current in the case of a short circuit to approximately 50mA, protecting the LDO and other electronic parts of the application from damage during a short circuit condition.
  • A slope control circuit controls the LDO during the power up sequence. The output voltage increases gradually and prevents high inrush current peaks and overshoots of the output voltage.
  • A thermal shutdown circuit prevents the LDO from exceeding a specific operating temperature. An optional feature is the auto-discharge function, which discharges the output capacitor quickly once the LDO is disabled.

For stable operation, small ceramic capacitors with low ESR and a minimum value of 1.0µF can be used. The fixed and adjustable output voltage versions have been combined into a single package, replacing the two packages with a different pin layout previously required.

RP111 is available in a regular SOT89-5, SOT23-5 and a small DFN1212-6 package, convenient to use on high density and small circuit boards.
